Abstract

For a small number of elderly people, infirmity causes dependence. This chapter looks at some of the ways in which we, as professional workers, or caring families, can deal with the problems caused by their infirmities. One answer is residential accommodation or ‘The Home’. While for some elderly people going into a home is a relief, for most it is a shattering and bewildering experience.

It should be the function of medicine to have people die young as late as possible
