Abstract

Students are taught that an essay should have a clear structure, with an introduction that sets out the thesis to be developed and, after the main arguments, a conclusion that reiterates the thesis and emphasises its major points. This book was presented in the Preface as an essay, and so a conclusion would seem desirable. None is provided, however, for the basic thesis relating to the importance of the study of the state in human geography does not bear reiteration; if the point has not been driven home by now …
