Abstract

This book began as an attempt to understand why theoretical linguistics had become such a fragmented field, why, in spite of its sophisticated techniques, it had provided so little insight into the workings of language. It has ended by offering a re-analysis of the domain of theoretical linguistics, a re-analysis in which language is no longer seen as a self-contained system but as inextricably bound up with the world as perceived by individual language users.
