Abstract

In the next three chapters we extend and explain in greater detail the concepts of grammar introduced in Chapter 2. It is simplest for us to start at the bottom of the rank scale, focusing on words in this chapter, then ascending the scale to phrases in Chapter 4, and to clauses in Chapter 5. It will become clearer, however, that we cannot fully under-stand one unit without taking proper account of the others.
