Abstract
Input/output I/O ports are the only method by which the CPU can communicate with devices in the ‘real’ world. They provide the means not only by which the user can input data to the CPU, but also the means by which the CPU outputs information to peripheral devices. Simplified I/O ports were introduced earlier in the book (see sections 1.5, 3.17 and 4.3); in this chapter we take a more detailed look at their operation together with methods of chip selection.
