Abstract

The present structure of British state welfare work was established by the reorganisation following the Local Authority Social Services Act by 1970. The Act received the Royal Assent on 29 May 1970 — the last day of the Labour-dominated Parliament, three weeks before Labour’s election defeat and the return of the Heath government.
