Abstract
Systems theory is introduced in this chapter as a way of understanding the components and properties of systems and therefore of organisations which are themselves systems. Using this understanding it is possible to determine the information requirements of the organisation. In considering systems ideas, a balance must be struck between what is theoretically possible from a MIS and what is practical.
