Abstract
These techniques are particular applications of planning and control, having special application for non-routine operations such as projects in design, in product development, in construction and in maintenance. The more complex the operations or project, the more useful network control can be. A project is analysed into its component activities. The optimum relative scheduling of each is decided; as the actual work proceeds, failures to meet completion dates can be forecast and corrections made in good time; it is an essential part of the technique that any ‘change of plan’ decisions are made with the costs of the changes clearly determined in advance.
