Labour Organisation and the Welfare State:a Comparative Historical Analysis

  • John D. Stephens
Part of the New Studies in Sociology book series

In this chapter we will take a closer look at the development of the welfare state and the ideology and programmes of the labour movement in four capitalist democracies: Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and France. These countries were chosen because they exemplify variant patterns of welfare state development. They differ not only in the level of spending and the method of financing of the welfare state, but also in the antecedent variables which were found in the last chapter to be related to welfare state development. After surveying the historical development of the welfare state in each country, the redistributive impact of the public sector in the four countries will be compared.
