Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to examine aspects of the social structure of education in two capitalist societies, Britain and the Federal Republic of Germany. Its aim is to relate the structure and functioning of education in the two societies to the historically evolving forms of their social systems. The point I seek to underline is that the social order which systems of education are required to reproduce is undergoing constant change and that the conditions of reproduction vary according to different types of capitalist development.
