Abstract

In comparing prisons and the treatment of certain types of prisoners in some industrially advanced countries and in others less advanced, it is clear that many doubts have been raised throughout long periods about the prison system and its effectiveness, about sentencing policy, parole, treatment and rehabilitation. In such countries as Britain and the United States that pay lip service to justice and equality the system is out-moded, creaking and unfair. It does not rehabilitate the offender nor does it equip him or her with the education, training or philosophy to lead a normal, fulfilling and successful life after discharge.
