Traditions of work amongst British Jews

The work orientation and behaviour of any social group reflects both the experience, goals and values of that group, and the constraints and opportunities of a particular setting. Jewish ethnicity as a dependent variable in work situations in Britain can be considered in two parts. First, the specific cultural traits which can be generalised for the group and which distinguish its members from the majority of the host population. This distinctive social philosophy, the Jewish Weltanschaung, may be termed the expressive factor. Second, the using of this common culture as a focus for solidarity and identity in actual social situations. This may be termed the utility factor.
