Abstract
It is a prime aim of any cancer programme to prevent the occurrence of cancer. This, however, is not possible at the present time in the majority of tumours and it becomes essential to use a second line of attack, that of early detection. Unfortunately there is no simple, reliable method for detecting all forms of cancer, in spite of repeated claims to be able to do so.
