Abstract

So far, the meaning, use and representation of a closed-loop control system have been discussed, and it has been established how to derive its behaviour in time following a change in some input signal. The present chapter and the two that follow go on to consider the analysis and design (or synthesis) of these systems. In this context, analysis is concerned with the means by which, given the form of the closed-loop system, the behaviour of the system may be analysed, while design is concerned with the means by which, given the form of the open-loop system, a controller that produces satisfactory closed-loop behaviour may be designed.
