Abstract

The very first stage in technology was the use by man of hand held weapons and tools to increase his own physical abilities. The simple stone and the wooden club were followed by flint chipping, wood and bone shaping, bone needles with eyes and the invention that gave the greatest extension to man’s strength, the wooden handle strongly fixed to a stone axe, spear or hammer head. Without this he could not cut down trees, dig standing up or hunt animals as large as himself.
