The Conservative Party is going through a period of major rethinking for the first time since 1945–50. These essays are intended as a contribution towards that process. Nearly all of them concern home affairs and these must be our major preoccupation just now, but I also commend Monty Woodhouse’s unorthodox essay on foreign policy and Graham Richards’s brief but highly stimulating piece on Conservatism and Science.
