The application of electromagnetism in situations of concern to the scientist and technologist requires a basic knowledge of vector analysis. Vector analysis is quite properly regarded as a subject in its own right and has many other applications such as in applied mechanics and crystallography as well as its very important application in electromagnetism. It is necessary, however, to discuss the basic principles of vector analysis and to introduce the readers to the recognised notation before considering its use in describing the behaviour of electromagnetic fields and waves. To begin with the definition of scalar and vector quantities are given.
