Reality and myth have always been restless in their literary wedlock. We need myth, of course, to find order in reality, but we are constantly tempted to use it to oversimplify the reality we are seeking. A remarkable example appears in the diverse interpretations of Henry James’s The Golden Bowl. Critics of the novel have often been at war as to the appropriate myth, and they have contorted reality to make it conform.
