Abstract
In Cyprus, many of the refugees from Syria were poverty-stricken. Although the Military Orders were able to import foodstuffs and necessities from Europe in great quantities,1 their morale was shattered; and the history of the Order of St. John from 1291 to 1310 can be divided into two periods. The first, until 1300, was characterised by internal conflict and a hopeless lack of purpose. The second, however, witnessed developments that were to lay the foundations of its new life on Rhodes.
