Abstract
My colleague, David Jackson, got it right when he said in his book, Dynamic Organisations:
Many believe strategy is about what happens in the future. Strategy is here and now [my emphasis]. This misconception leads people away from action into interminably long planning cycles.
One of Jack Welch’s early actions when he took over at General Electric was to dismantle the corporate strategic planning group. He pronounced the corporate strategy to be the now celebrated, ‘No. 1 or No. 2 in every market we serve.’ That is all the strategy GE needed!
