Abstract

Poetry is the writing form that is nearest to music, and nearest to dance. Lyric poems were originally sung to the lyre by Sappho and her young women on Lesbos, and it was on the shores of Lesbos that the lyre of Orpheus was washed up after Orpheus himself had been ripped to pieces by the Bacchae, the wild women who followed Dionysus, God of Wine.
