Abstract

The play opens with the figure of Rumour, who, with a grim though quite energetic relish, enjoys the power he exercises over a listening world. He prepares the audience for the agents of rumour, who ride to Northumberland’s castle and who gradually reveal what Rumour has truthfully told us — that the King won the battle at Shrewsbury and that Hotspur is dead.
