Abstract
This chapter describes investment at national level in Scotland which has encouraged developments in reflective practice and nursing audit. This includes the Strategy for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting in Scotland Project, the Scottish Nursing Audit Project and the distance learning programme Moving to Audit: An Education Package for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (University of Dundee Centre for Medical Education, 1994). It questions what is understood by the term ‘clinical supervision’ and goes on to recount the thinking of the NHS Trust Directors of Nursing Services Group on clinical supervision. It then describes the different approaches to the implementation of clinical supervision adopted by one health board directly managed unit, two NHS trusts and one education provider. These descriptions are first-hand accounts provided specifically for this chapter by nurses involved in devising these approaches.
