Abstract

It has to be recognised that there is no universally accepted conventional design practice, or a universally accepted nomenclature, when codes and standards are not being used. In this chapter, I shall attempt to describe what seems to me to be the general methodology adopted, and note variations from it as the occasion requires. In the first instance it is advantageous to concentrate exclusively on stress-rupture phenomena. Then design involving wear-out will be examined.
