Magda and I met on Václavské náměstí, the central square in Prague, which is always teeming with shoppers, students, and what, at any given moment, seems like hundreds of American and German tourists. Perhaps the crowds swarming around us inspired her because within minutes of meeting each other, Magda declared how much she hates Americans and tourists, especially German tourists, because they drive the prices up. She quickly qualified her hatred of Americans to explain she hates all Americans, not just tourists. She expressed a very strong dislike of anything American and stated that she would never like to go to America. As she steered us towards a side-street cafe, she pointed to the fast food restaurants flanking the square and declared that the last place she would ever want to meet someone is in McDonald’s.
