The Relationship between the Liberal and Social Democratic Parties, 1981–88, and the Formative Years of the Liberal Democrats

Abstract

This chapter examines the relationship between the Liberal and Social Democratic parties, resulting in the formation of the Alliance in 1981 and culminating in the partial merger of the two parties in 1988. The initial progress of the merged party (the Liberal Democrats) will also be briefly considered.
