Abstract

Buddhism began in India around 500 years BCE. Many people at that time had become disillusioned with some of the beliefs of Hinduism, especially the caste system and the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. People turned to other beliefs and many new sects arose. It was in this climate that Buddhism appeared.
