Abstract

At the end of this chapter you should be able to:

• 1. explain what is meant by the terms ‘science’ and ‘scientific method’;

• 2. discuss the use of scientific method in psychology;

• 3. consider alternatives to the scientific approach to psychology;

• 4. explain what is meant by cultural bias in psychological theory and research studies;

• 5. identify ways in which racial and gender bias may affect psychological theory and research studies; and
