Abstract

At the end of this chapter you should be able to:

  1. 1.

    describe and evaluate five major theoretical approaches to psychology: physiological, psychoanalytic, behaviourist, cognitive and humanistic;

  2. 2.

    discuss different levels of explanation of psychological functioning; and

  3. 3.

    consider a number of issues and debates about the nature of the person in psychology, including heredity and environment, free will and determinism the mind/body problem and reductionism.
