Abstract
The Internet was originally owned by the American government. First, it was sponsored by and served the communications needs of the Department of Defense, then it became the network of American universities and the research community under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation. Today the Internet is a cooperative structure spanning the globe and overseen by the Internet Society (ISOC).
