Abstract

The role played by the Holocaust survivors in Israel’s War of Independence and the ways in which they were recruited into the defence forces are an emotionally charged issue. For the survivors and their descendants, the pain has never been fully assuaged and, to this day, veteran Yishuv leaders still find themselves having to explain and justify their actions.
