Leaders of the export growth oriented, market economies of East Asia have long viewed Japan as an enviable model of economic development. Now, with rapid economic growth in these countries generating strong domestic pressures for political change, Asian political elites have begun to look to Japan not only for what it has to offer in terms of economic development but as a potential model of political development as well.
