Abstract

The need to measure distances and directions accurately gave rise to the development of geometry in Egypt and Greece round about the sixth century BC. In the third century BC Euclid formalised many of the known ideas and discovered many new theorems. He wrote a series of books known as The Elements which remained the main source of geometrical studies for the next 2000 years, a quite remarkable achievement.
