Abstract
Antenatal education has frequently been seen as a challenge for midÂwifery (Murphy-Black 1990). Now, with the increased emphasis on health promotion (DoH 1992), the complexity of working with women has increased even further. Uncertainty exists in the minds of midwives and managers over the continued allocation of scarce midwifery resources to these activities, especially antenatal classes. Do they benefit women, their babies and the service? If they do, how can we demonstrate this?
