Recent Changes in Polish Youth’s Social and Political Consciousness

Abstract

This chapter reviews recent changes in Polish youth’s attitudes and life orientation. Such changes reveal an increase in educational aspirations, an increase in the estimated value of education and work, a feeling of being more in control of one’s life, and a less pessimistic and fearful outlook on the future. These are all symptoms of society’s ‘healing’ process and of positive adaptation to the new market economy and current political reality. However, not the whole young generation evidences these positive changes. Most important in this respect seems to be the economic, cultural, and social ‘capital’ transmitted through one’s family background.
