Original Fallacy

  • A. E. Dyson

I come now to a main reason for the disrepute into which religion has fallen. For historial reasons which have ceased to be valid but which linger on in assumptions, we pretend that Man, and ‘this’ world, were created perfect. God intended it to be Paradise, and placed the new-minted race of humankind here, as a proper home. It is then assumed that subsequent ills were due to ‘The Fall of Man’ (the Eden myth, whether treated literally, or as allegory); or maybe, to a prior Fall of Lucifer/Satan, which led to Satan’s successful tempting of the first woman Eve and, through her, of Adam.
