Summary

This paper describes a method of fast in-process measurement of surface geometry features such as orientation and standoff of workpieces using simple shape analysis of a projected light spot by CCD vision. This is aimed to on-line navigate the CNC or robotic machining path in a 3-D environment. Further, the high temperature, visible light emitting hot spot or meltpool produced during laser processing was used to abstract information on position and orientation of the processing centre point on the workpiece. The information was used directly as well as compared to the tracking (leading) beam spot for the closed loop predictive control of the CNC processing. Other information such as edge, hole, bend, corner presence can also be detected using knowledge based heuristics. Theoretical study and experimental performance of the developed system are presented.
