Abstract
The pages that follow have but a modest objective. They do not aim at providing a complete or scientifically irreprehensible analysis, nor do they offer specific remedies for specific problems. It was thought appropriate to suggest some issues for discussion at a moment when there appears to be no debate, at government and decision-making levels, on the strategy to be followed in the new environment in which Italy finds itself. As regards tactics, Italy is navigating at sight or drawing inspiration from the strategies of the past. As indicated in the bracketed subheading, the opinions expressed are purely personal.
This note was written while the author served as an advisor to the Italian Treasury. As made clear by the subtitle, the views expressed in the note are the author’s only.
