Abstract

It is 1 March 1986 — my first day at the new Komatsu plant at Birtley, Tyne and Wear, in the North East of England. By a strange quirk of circumstance, this was the site of a failed plant belonging to Komatsu’s eldest and most prominent rival, Caterpillar, the US giant in plant manufacture.
