Abstract

The calculus was invented independently by Isaac Newton in England about 1687, and in Germany by Gottfried Leibnitz in about 1684. There has always been controversy as to whom should be given the credit, but both had in fact brought together ideas that had been developed by other mathematicians during the preceding 200 years.
