Abstract
The Christian theologian Augustine (354–430) once said, “If you do not ask me what time is, I know; if you ask me, I do not know.”1 The same point applies to the terms religion and religious. At first sight these words appear to be self-explanatory, yet they defy precise definition because they carry different meanings for different people.
