Summary

One of the most important topics in Stretch Reducing Mill use is the choice of cage speed which produces the desired final thickness of the tube by using as few cages as possible.

In previous papers, the Authors Irm’e presented a FORTRAN code able to link tire set of axial actio IJS along the mill with both the speed programme alld the final till the thickness; IroW attention is focused on predicting tire effects of a known speed programme.

The aim of the present work is to solve the problem in terms of cage speeds, so detemlillillg the stresses and the filial tlrickness of the tube; in this way it is possible to balance the “workload” of the cages, computillg tire speed programme best able to optimize the ratio between tire maximum stress variation, due to each cage, and the corresponding actual variations.

The output of the simulation programme is compared with some experimental data, given by the literature.
