Summary
In FMS environment a large variety of tools are shared resources being employed to process different part type varying the cutting parameters during their useful life. The paper suggests a new methodology to predict the tool life on line using the information deriving from the control station of the production system to gain information about the tool wear.
The predicted tool life can be used to determine an economically optimal tool replacement strategy. Some replacement strategies are examined and compared with the one often utilised in production environment in which the tool is replaced when it works for a little percentage of the expected tool life in order that the risk of defective item is negligible.
