Some Ultrasonic Effects in Machining Materials Encountered in the Offshore Industries
This paper describes some ultrasonics aspects of a work programme exploring the feasibility for a combined electrochemical / ultrasonic machining system. An increase in Total Harmonic Distortion THD of the ultrasonic sound emmision “spectral signature” has been observed for increasing tool feed pressure. The increase in THD above an optimun point has been correlated to the effciency of the ultrasonic component of the process. The relative magnetudes of the THD has also been shown to indicate which of the general material types is being machined. This information can be used to provide appropriate modulation of the tool amplitude in response to the form of the “spectral Signature”.
