Abstract
In 1981, the Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir, declared a policy of ‘Look East’ in Malaysia (Jomo, 1985, p. 312). This was geographically odd. The reference points were Japan, South Korea and Taiwan and yet these could be said to be as much north of Malaysia as east. However, what ‘Look East’ was intended to signify was a reorientation of foreign, trade and industrial policy away from the UK, the old colonial master1, towards Japan and the rapidly-growing newly industrialised economies of East Asia.
