Sartre: Freedom as Something to which Man is Condemned
We use the term ‘free’ in many different connections both of human beings and also of things. We may say of the moving part of a mechanism that ‘it is moving freely’ meaning that something that was obstructing its movements has been removed, or that the socket in which it was moving is clear. There has to be some positive suggestion or suspicion to this effect which is being denied (see Austin, 1961).
