Abstract

The European Community consists of twelve independent states: France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg (the six original members); the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and Denmark (which joined in 1973); Greece (which joined in 1981); and Spain and Portugal (which joined in 1986). Together they have a population of over 320 million. The Community has set a target date of 1992 for the completion of the Single European Market — that is, the removal of all the physical, technical and financial barriers to trade within the EC.
