Abstract
What is a nursing theory? A definition of nursing theory given by Stevens (1984) notes that it is an ‘attempt to describe or explain the phenomenon called nursing.’ This definition, though helpful, is nevertheless inadequate, for nursing is not strictly a phenomenon but rather a widely recognised activity. It is therefore important for those coming to the study of nursing theories for the first time, to add that a nursing theory not only describes and explains what nurses do but, as Jacox (1974) points out, also gives guidance for action needed to meet nursing goals. Table 1.1 summarises the definitions used by theorists.
