Abstract
Many of the applications systems in use cover functions which are common to a large number of organisations, either within a specific industry or more generally across a range of industries. Thus, for example, all employers face the need to process payrolls and, within a given taxation jurisdiction, the procedures for calculation are usually much the same. In the same way, most organisations have basically similar approaches towards the maintenance of purchase, sales and general ledgers while many manufacturing companies in the assembly based industries (e.g. automotive and consumer durables (white goods)) face similar needs to schedule material to a production process or assembly line in response to orders (materials requirement planning or MRP for short).
