Part of the How to Study Literature book series

Abstract

What we aim to do in this chapter is to look at TV sitcoms, concentrating our analysis on the episode ‘Gourmet Night’ (TX 17 October 1975, BBC2), from the Fawlty Towers series, written by John Cleese and Connie Booth. There are several reasons why we have chosen to study this programme. The first and most obvious reason is that we feel Fawlty Towers is excellent television, supported by superb scripts and some brilliant acting. Second, the scripts have been published as The Complete Fawlty Towers (Mandarin, 1988) so you should be able to get hold of the script fairly easily if you want to develop your analysis of this or of any other episode from the series. And third, recordings of the programme are available through video libraries and from the BBC. All in all this programme seems, therefore, a good place to start looking at the TV sitcom.
